The Abu Simbel temples are famous for a unique solar alignment that occurs twice a year, illuminating the statues of Ramses II and other deities within the temple's inner sanctuary. This phenomenon happens on February 22nd and October 22nd. These dates are believed to correspond to Ramses II's birthday and coronation, respectively. The sun's rays penetrate the temple and travel 200 meters to reach the statues, with the exception of Ptah, the god of darkness, who remains in shadow.
The solar alignment is a significant event, attracting tourists and locals alike to witness the spectacle. The event is celebrated with festivities, including traditional music and dance performances, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The Abu Simbel Sun Festival is a testament to the ingenuity of the ancient Egyptians and their understanding of astronomy.
In the Great Temple of Abu Simbel, built by Pharaoh Ramses II, the sun is aligned in such a way that twice a year its rays reach deep into the temple's inner chamber (the sanctuary) and illuminate:
Importantly, Ptah, the god of the underworld, remains in darkness — reflecting his association with the afterlife.
🕗 Time of alignment: Around sunrise (between 5:45–6:30 AM)
For about 20–25 minutes, the sunlight travels through the temple’s entrance corridor (about 60 meters deep) and lights the statues in the sanctuary.
